Tirupati Railway Station to Tirumala: Bus, Taxi and Walk

Checked on 4 October 2026. Arriving by train? First decide whether you want to travel uphill by road or begin a walking pilgrimage. For a straightforward transfer, look for the APSRTC service to Tirumala. A taxi can make group luggage easier to manage; walking requires a separate journey to a footpath entrance.

This guide covers the transfer from the station, the differences between the three options, and what to check before leaving Tirupati.

1. Check which railway station you are arriving at

Read the destination on your train ticket carefully. Tirupati and Renigunta are different stations. TTD lists Renigunta as an alternative arrival point from which pilgrims can continue to Tirupati by road. If your ticket ends at Renigunta, allow for that additional transfer rather than following Tirupati station directions immediately.

At Tirupati station, gather your group and count your bags before heading outside. Follow current transport signs or ask railway or APSRTC staff where to board a bus to Tirumala. Use this clear question: “Where is today's APSRTC boarding point for Tirumala?” A precise station exit or bus bay has not been verified for this guide.

2. Take an APSRTC bus to Tirumala

TTD's dedicated transport page lists regular APSRTC services from Tirupati Railway Station, RTC Central Bus Station, Sri Padmavathi Bus Station and Balaji Link Bus Station. Check the destination board and confirm “Tirumala” with the conductor before loading luggage.

Ask the official counter or conductor for the current fare, the next departure, and any suitable return-ticket option. Official web pages contain conflicting fare figures, so a price copied from an old guide may mislead you. Keep your ticket until the journey is finished and check its conditions before relying on it for a return trip.

Build your schedule backwards from your darshan reporting time. Include the boarding wait, road journey and onward movement after reaching Tirumala. Avoid connecting a train arrival to darshan with no spare time; no fixed journey duration is promised here.

3. Consider a taxi for your group

TTD allows hired taxis and suitable maxi cabs on the hill route. A licensed taxi may be convenient if your group wants to travel together with several bags. Before agreeing, confirm the total price, vehicle size, luggage space, pickup point and exact drop-off.

Ask whether tolls, parking, waiting and any return journey are included. Get the agreed details in writing, especially if the driver will collect you again. This guide does not quote an unverified taxi tariff or recommend an individual operator. Transport arrangements should be kept separate from any promise of darshan access.

4. Reach Alipiri or Srivari Mettu before walking

The two pedestrian routes start at Alipiri and Srivari Mettu. TTD's dedicated route page lists their lengths as about 7.8 km and 2.1 km respectively. These are footpath distances, not distances from the railway platform. TTD also describes free feeder buses from Tirupati to the footpath starting areas; ask staff for the current boarding point and service availability.

Check the day's opening hours and safety instructions before travelling to either entrance. A shorter route still involves an uphill climb. Choose according to your group's comfort and physical ability, and leave room for rest stops. Do not use a suggested walking duration as a deadline to rush.

Walking and darshan arrangements need separate checks. Before starting, confirm the current pedestrian-token procedure and any restrictions with official staff. Do not assume that reaching the top automatically guarantees a particular darshan slot.

5. Plan a rest stop and luggage arrangements

After an overnight train, a break in Tirupati can be more practical than immediately continuing uphill. In its 14 May 2026 notice, TTD describes accommodation and pilgrim facilities in Tirupati, including rest areas, lockers, bathing facilities, Annaprasadam and medical services. Named complexes include Vishnunivasam and Srinivasam. Check availability and the relevant counter before building your plan around a room or locker.

TTD also operates official luggage deposit services, including facilities for footpath pilgrims. Before handing over bags, ask where and when to collect them, and keep the issued token safe. Keep anything needed during the transfer with you rather than in deposited baggage.

Before you leave the station

  • Confirm Tirupati or Renigunta on your ticket.
  • Choose road travel or a footpath transfer.
  • Check today's boarding point, fare and operating restrictions.
  • Keep darshan details, identification and essential belongings accessible.
  • Save your return train details and allow a separate downhill travel buffer.

Common questions

Is the bus from Tirupati to Tirumala free?

APSRTC's uphill service is a fare-paying service. TTD's free feeder buses to footpath entrances and its free Dharma Radhams for local travel within Tirumala serve different purposes. Check which service you are boarding.

Can I arrive late at night and go straight uphill?

Do not assume every route operates all night. Confirm the day's road access and bus availability before departure, and have a place to wait or rest if onward travel is unavailable.

What should I do after reaching Tirumala?

Check your accommodation or darshan reporting location before choosing local transport. TTD's Dharma Radhams connect several pilgrim facilities around Tirumala; confirm the appropriate stop with staff.
