Tirumala Dress Code: A Practical Clothing Checklist

Choose your Tirumala darshan clothes before packing the rest of the bag. A familiar, comfortable outfit that follows TTD’s instructions is easier to manage than a last-minute purchase near the queue. Keep a clean set ready, particularly if you are arriving after a long journey or a climb.

Start with the instructions for your booking

TTD publishes traditional clothing guidance on its dress-code page and in its pilgrim FAQ. The examples cover dhoti and kurta-pyjama combinations for men, and saree, half-saree and churidar combinations for women. The upper garment or cloth is part of the guidance, so pack the complete outfit.

Read the instructions on your own darshan or seva booking as well. A general website description cannot settle every question about a particular service. If your planned clothing does not clearly fit the listed examples, ask TTD before travel rather than relying on an online account of what another visitor wore.

What to put in the darshan clothing bag

For men, TTD’s dress-code page names a dhoti or pyjamas with an upper cloth. Its FAQ is more specific, giving a dhoti with shirt or a kurta-pyjama set as examples. An outfit assembled only from the lower garment misses that second part.

For women, the published examples are a saree or half-saree with blouse, or churidar with pyjama and an upper cloth. The FAQ identifies that upper cloth as a dupatta. Check that all the pieces are packed together, rather than assuming a family member has put one of them into another suitcase.

Try the outfit before the journey

Choose something you can sit, stand and walk in comfortably. If you rarely wear a dhoti or saree, practise arranging it at home. Check the length, fastening and freedom of movement in advance, and pack any ordinary accessories you personally need to wear it securely.

Plan where you will change

TTD’s visitor guidance asks pilgrims to bathe and wear clean clothes before entering the shrine. Make this part of the day’s plan. If you are walking up, allow time after reaching Tirumala to collect luggage, refresh yourself and change before reporting.

Ask about the actual facilities available to you. A room booking, a general rest area and a public changing arrangement are different things. Do not assume that a private space will appear next to the entry point when you need it.

Keep the clothing change separate from the plan for storing bags or electronics. You should know what you are taking to the entrance, what is deposited elsewhere and where you will collect it afterwards.

Small details worth checking

TTD asks visitors not to wear footwear inside and around the temple premises and says flowers should not be worn at the Tirumala temple. Its guidance also advises against carrying large amounts of jewellery and cash. Consider those instructions while preparing, rather than making hurried decisions at the final checkpoint.

If someone has a religious, accessibility or other specific need that affects clothing, contact TTD about that situation in advance. This guide cannot promise an exception or decide how staff will apply a rule.

A final check before leaving your room

  • The whole outfit is ready, including the upper garment or cloth.
  • Everyone has read the instructions that apply to their booking.
  • You have allowed time to change after travel or walking.
  • You know the arrangements for footwear and other belongings.
  • Any unresolved clothing question has been put to TTD.

Use our first-time Tirupati and Tirumala guide to connect these preparations with accommodation, transport and the reporting time. A few decisions made early can make the final approach to darshan much calmer.
